Malware - yes there is some. However, you have to pay for the premium definitions. With that being said, I feel like I need some protection. The only thing it is missing is a scheduled scan, but in two years, it hasn't found anything during regular manual scans, and it has knock down three viruses specifically designed to attack OSX. Re your Sophos "The only thing it is missing is a scheduled scan" after your initial install manual scan, by default Sophos uses "on Access" scans so you have real-time protection.

I had downloaded it when I got my macbook in Free antivirus and malware security for your Mac! It also lets you know when a document or app tries to phone home. Getting the full suite or I should say the revenue-driven rental model that I loathe can be a bit expensive if on a strained budget, even if you can manage to catch one of the promos they run every so often and I encourage you to watch for them, as they are really on sale.
